CORINE Land Cover (CLC) is one of the projects in CORINE (Coordination of Information on the Environment), which was initiated by EU with the aim to facilitate the planning and implementation of the EU environmental policy.
The objective of the project is the provision of a current and between countries comparable data base for environmental purposes. The project is coordinated by The European Environment Agency, EEA.
The classification
In the products the vegetation and land types are presented in 44 different classes. For Sweden 35 of these classes are relevant. The classification is organized in three levels with the following main classes:
- Artificial areas
- Agricultural areas
- Forest and semi-natural areas
- Wetland
- Water bodies
Timeliness
The first iteration of the data series covered the reference year 1990. Sweden was not a member of the EU at the time and did therefor not participate. At the subsequent release covering the year 2000, Sweden did participate. Further releases of CLC was carried out 2006, 2012 and 2018.
