Retrieve and analyze your map

The lesson is designed for primary school grades 4-6. Here the students can produce their own map using the e-service Kartutskrift. When they have printed their map, they can work on reading and analyzing the map using the legend. The task ends with the whole class discussing different ways of using the map - areas of use.

Part 1 - Choose an area and print your own map

Here's how:

  1. Open e-service Kartutskrift.
  2. Locate the town where you live.
  3. Move the map so that your residential area is approximately in the center of the grid.
  4. Zoom in as much as possible and then click on "Ändra" (Change) at the bottom of the page.
  5. Select the scale 1:10,000, which means that 1 cm on the map represents 100 meters in reality.
  6. Click on "Skapa karta" (Create map) at the bottom of the page and customize the map by checking the boxes for "Norrpil" (North arrow), "Rutnät" (Grid), "Teckenförklaring" (Legend), "Skalstock" (Scale bar), and "Gradnät" (Latitude and longitude grid).
  7. Then click "Ok" to create a PDF that you can save or print.

Part 2 - Investigate and explain

Read and analyze the map. The map you have created consists of 12 map sheets and a legend at the back. Choose the map sheet that includes your residence. Retrieve the legend and study the map using it.

Describe how the area where you live looks, using the following questions:

  • What does the terrain look like on your map sheet? Are there forests, cultivated land, waterways, lakes, and mountains?
  • What kind of forests can you find?
  • Can you tell what the cultivated land is used for?
  • How tall are the mountains and heights that exist?
  • What else can you find on your map sheet? Give a few examples.

Part 3 - Discussion

Summarize the exercise as a whole class and discuss the following:

In what ways can the map be useful if, for example, you are planning to build a new school, a new sports facility, or a new residential area?
