Two-dimensional systems

Some of our older reference systems are two-dimensional, meaning that they do not have a direct connection to the height component.

RT 90 and RT 38 are examples of two-dimensional reference systems. Plane coordinate systems are often connected to a three-dimensional reference system by a map projection, e.g. SWEREF 99 TM.

For practical purposes it is easier to use plane coordinates than geographic or three-dimensional coordinates. A plane coordinate system is therefore often used to define positions.

Information about some Swedish plane coordinate systems is given here. More information about map projections is given on the map projection page (in Swedish).
