The total area of the lakes in Sweden is 40 660 square km, which represents 9 per cent of the whole land area.

The county with the largest number of lakes is Norrbotten. More than 30 730 of the lakes in Norrbotten have an area greater than one hectare. Arjeplog is the municipality with the largest number of lakes - 8 727.

The island of Gotland is the county which has the lowest number of lakes - 87.

The two largest islands are Gotland (3 001 square km) and Öland (1 344 square km).

Fishing is a popular leisure activity along the Swedish coast and in lakes and rivers, and more than one million Swedes go fishing more than five times a year.

40 per cent of the fish caught are pike, perch and zander, 25 per cent is cod and other saltwater fish and 20 per cent is some form of salmon.
